The subject of viability testing leads us to the definition of the first phase of the filmmaking process called “development”. The writer takes the ideas in their head and develops them into a fully formed visualization of the story and put it into the creative blueprint known as the script. Once completed, the producer evaluates the script to make a determination whether A) it can be made and B) whether it should be made.

At its very beginning, we are approaching the project from only the writer’s perspective since nothing can happen with the project at all until the script is complete. Being the only person involved with the story, the writer can be quite indulgent and let their imagination run wild and free, unfettered with the dreary mundane details of everyday reality. However, the savvy writer must also realize that if they ever wish to see their script produced into a movie, they need to write something that will be palatable to the producer. To shape the script is such a way as to appeal to a producer, it is helpful to know a little bit about the producer’s perspective offers a variety of products to meet your individual needs. The producer’s evaluation of a script is comprised of a few different viability tests. At an amateur level, the viability tests are not particularly rigorous because there is not that much money at stake. We’ll come back to viability testing later once the script is done but for the purposes of an amateur script for a short film, there are three main factors to keep in mind in order of ascending importance. So a word of advice to the savvy writer sitting down to write out their idea. Let your imagination run wild and free as you can but not too wild. Short films should be short so keep the number of pages down. Reduce locations and characters if you can. If you can’t and your script would lose its dynamic.
